Humans need connection. We’d all like the people in our lives to be like-minded or at least supportive, but sometimes they’re just not. Which can make connecting with others feel scary or like too much work. Perhaps you're someone who would love to just be by yourself for rest of your life. That can sound good, but… The desire to connect is a human attribute that we need to intentionally bring back into vogue. Why? Because that’s how we grow. When I think of connection, the image that forms in my mind is of a grid, a network, with a light at the intersection where two lines meet. The lines represent the energetic flow of myself and those people who are, or who will be, in my life. Life lines perhaps. Some of the intersections are lit, some are dark. I presume the unlit intersections are people I haven’t met yet.
Thinking about connection and lighting up the network demonstrates the coming together of two souls. When I think about it, I feel a tingle - two souls lighting up the world. Two souls coming together providing each other with an energy needed for growth. When I think about connection in this way, relationships that are a bit rocky make more sense. The intersection of the two souls coming together still light up the grid, even though on a physical level the two individuals clash with each other. Why is that? Is it because the two souls have information for each other? A missing energy that can offer growth? A life line in disguise? I think so. When we’re in relationship with another person, they offer us a reflection of ourselves. When I find myself not liking another person or something they said, that’s my sign to go inward and see what’s being triggered inside me wanting to be revealed, allowing me to explore and transform the energy. This person is the connection I needed to help me see what I couldn’t see on my own. And then of course there are the lights on the grid that represent connections with people who are supportive and like-minded. Their lights aren’t any brighter, they simply provide a different experience. Both kinds of connections are important. Humans need connection. We need to be with and around people. We need to talk and share and allow ourselves to be vulnerable and fearless enough to risk lighting up all the intersections on our grid. There will always be lights on the grid that are dark – people you haven’t met yet. Be brave and know that the people you connect with have something to offer you and you have something to offer them.
