When I was in my late fifties, I learned I wasn't broken.
I learned that while I was trying to control my environment through restrictive dieting, I was really trying to restore wholeness in myself. I didn't realize at the time that I was working against myself. Dieting had been a way of life for me and it took 40 years before I woke up to the fact that I had a very distorted relationship with myself, my body and with food. So, I went on a journey to discover who I was and who I wanted to be. It seems that life is our greatest teacher giving each of us our own unique opportunities for growth. My life’s experiences have shown me the depths of struggle and despair and because of them, I have had a lot of fertilizer with which to create a greener pasture. As Thich Nhat Hahn said, "No mud, no lotus." |
