I used to love the idea of trying to get everything perfect. It was a full-time job of mine. But over time I have come to realize that perfection is an illusion. Can life really be perfect? And what is perfection anyway? Is your idea of perfection the same as mine? How can that even be a possibility?
When we seek perfection, we are attaching ourselves to the impossible. When we don't reach it we feel let down or not good enough. Perfection isn't achievable, it's a moving target, and it means something different for everyone - it's a one-way ticket on the crazy train. When we strive for perfection we are denying ourselves our humanity, the opportunity to live life. How important is it really that the scale read a certain number or that you eat the perfect number of calories or points in a day? How important is it that you always have exactly the perfect thing to say or write the perfect words. When you don't live up to the expectations of perfection that you have imposed on yourself do you either freeze in fear or well up in anger? Is that what life is about? I have come to realize that for me perfection is what I think others are expecting of me. So that's pretty funny, because how am I supposed to know what that is? I sure used to spend a lot of time worrying about it though. Seeking perfection and trying to control life is a no-win proposition. Can you allow yourself to relax and trust in your uniqueness? Trust that when you are doing your best, you are doing enough. Trust that when you are in alignment with yourself, you are working with and not against yourself. Trust that what you think others think of you doesn't matter. What does matter is that you step into loving yourself enough to allow yourself to be real, be imperfect. That's where we find the juiciness of life. Allowing ourselves to be imperfect says that we are strong enough to handle what might come our way, that we don't need to fear the unknown. And the really great thing is, when you let go of your need for perfection, perfection let's go of you. Go ahead, let go!
