Sleep is a very important part of our 24 hour cycle and yet many of us don't get a good night's sleep. We toss and turn lying awake or perhaps we're too hot to sleep. If this is you, then consider the following: try eating at least 4 hours before heading off to bed and see if making a smaller dinner is helpful. All that food and drink needs to be digested and assimilated prior to going to bed, otherwise you'll be metabolizing that food while you're trying to sleep and the metabolic process creates heat. Sleep is intended to be downtime so your body can detox and do all the things it needs to do. It does not want to be dealing with your dinner or late night snack. If you wake up and are not particularly hungry for breakfast and you tossed and turned all night, this could be an indicator of eating too much dinner and too late.
"For those of you whose sleep is chaotic, the following is from Susan Gregg who teaches in the Toltec tradition. I find her work and her words to be very soothing and a gift. Not long ago she offered this bedtime routine in her Daily Reflections. I thought it was truly lovely and she has given me permission to share it with you. Enjoy. Before I go to bed I take a long slow bath. Sometimes I use essential oils and light a candle. I allow the bath to release all the energy from the day. I relax and let go. Then I look in the mirror and talk lovingly with myself. I write a short list of to do's so I won't think about them anymore. I review the day in reverse letting go of any stuck energy and notice if there is something I need to handle in the morning. I set right anything that is out of balance so I can go to sleep from a loving, centered place. I wrap myself in a blanket of love and give myself over to the care of my soul for the night. At times I imagine falling asleep in the arms of my soul. When I do that I awaken with a sense of happiness, joy, peace and ease. I seem to intuitively know what to do. Give yourself the gift of nurturing, pampering and loving yourself into sleep. With love and aloha, Susan Take a moment for yourself. http://susangregg.com/meditation/meditation1.htm www.susangregg.com
