It's that time of year when we can take the seeds that we've been collecting over the winter and start planting. It's always an exciting time. I love thinking about the seeds as they go into the soil, how they will one day bare the bulk of my summer meal. This year I'm planting kale, green beans, collard greens, lots of herbs, including basil - always basil. I generally start out cautious, being realistic from the previous year. Then, as the excitement of the season pounces on me, I get more adventurous. So I'll either go purchase more seeds, or wait and buy some seedlings that are garden ready. Each year is different.
Even when I don't have the wherewithal to plant much of a garden, I like to have a little something. I think it's important to have even a small kitchen garden with thyme or rosemary to remind me of my connection to the nature of things. I love being reminded that within one seed, when combined with soil, water, and sun, is the impulse to grow. All the information necessary to create a plant is in that seed. We are like that seed. Everything we need to grow in mind, body, and spirit is contained within us. The impulse is there. When we remember to love ourselves, when we remember to be around people who nourish us, when we remember to allow our wisdom to flow, we are like a seed. We grow and flourish - everything we need is inside of us. The seeds we plant in our gardens are reminders of the seeds that are within us. Grow yourself a garden and be reminded.
